Two Lesser-known features of iOS 5
Shortcuts One feature that I’m using a fair bit in iOS 5 is Shortcuts. ‘Shortcuts’ are pre-defined text snippets that work throughout the system. Think of Shortcuts as a simplified TextExpander on your iOS device. This video by ios5today shows how the Shortcuts feature works. Speak Selection Another useful, but rather limited feature is ‘Speak Selection’. Now...

Why Cover Flow is Broken
Cover Flow enables you to flick through your music by album artwork. It’s a great little feature but it’s broken and alway has been. Cover Flow works as you would expect when at a root level i.e on the Artists or Albums tab but not when browsing inside a playlist. Try it yourself. When you’re browsing inside a playlist turn the iPod landscape to enter Cover Flow mode. Now...

Richard Gaywood On Apple Subscription →
Richard Gaywood nails it: Isn’t Apple supposed to be the most user-centric company on the planet? Removing things people use — that I use — without any sort of quid pro quo doesn’t sound like a user-centric change to me. It feels downright user hostile, in fact. Where’s my upside? I’m not disputing that iOS is a pleasant walled garden. But when the garden you’ve chosen to live in...

Everytime I click ‘update all’ on the app updates page of iTunes I see this bug. The bug has been around since early July 2010, that’s eight months and there’s still no fix from Apple. It seems I’m not the only one suffering with this. There’s over 40 replies to my initial post on the Apple Discussion Forum Come on Apple pull your finger out and...

Why I'm An Atheist by Ricky Gervais →
believing in something doesn’t make it true. Hoping that something is true doesn’t make it true. The existence of God is not subjective. He either exists or he doesn’t. It’s not a matter of opinion. You can have your own opinions. But you can’t have your own facts. An excellent piece by Ricky Gervais

South Bank Juggler (by Dave Day) My first trip out testing the EOS 550D T2i. A cold November morning in London. Stabilisation was a real problem, I used a monopod but looking at this footage it’s obvious I really needed a tripod. I found changing lenses a pain so stuck with the 50mm prime. Editing in iMovie ‘11 was quick and easy. All footage shot in 720 50p, exported as 25p ...
